Google recently introduced its highly anticipated Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro models, with rumors swirling about the potential release of the Google Pixel 8a next year. However, amidst the excitement, the likelihood of a truly budget-friendly phone to complete the Pixel series seems slim.
Nanda Ramachandran, VP of Google Mobile Business, disclosed to Der Standard (via Android Police) that there are currently no plans for a low-cost Google Pixel phone. Ramachandran explained that creating such a device would require compromising on various aspects, making it an unfavorable option.
To illustrate this point, Ramachandran highlights the Google Pixel 7a, which boasts the same Tensor G2 chip found in the higher-priced Google Pixel 7 Pro. Thus, despite its lower price tag, the Pixel 7a does not sacrifice processor performance.
Ramachandran further emphasizes that Google aims to expand the Pixel series into more markets across Europe and Asia, seeking to enhance brand recognition and bolster sales concurrently.
Considering the price range, the Google Pixel 7a starts at $499 / £449 / AU$749. While this already represents a reasonable cost, our list of the best budget phones demonstrates that smartphones can be obtained for considerably less than the Pixel 7a.
It is worth noting that there has been a price increase between the Pixel 7 series and the latest Pixel 8 series. This price hike aligns with the enhancements in internal specifications, camera systems, and the extended support for software and security updates spanning seven years.
Moreover, the new Pixel phones come equipped with advanced AI features. Consequently, reducing these features significantly to achieve a price point approximately one-third of the Pixel 8’s cost would not make sense for Google at this time, as stated by Ramachandran.
Nevertheless, Google has demonstrated a strong track record with its mid-range handsets, effectively balancing pricing and features, ensuring a more affordable option without compromising essential functionalities. As a result, we eagerly anticipate what the Google Pixel 8a will offer in terms of value and performance.
